Hey guys!
I know it's been a while, and everyone is probably expecting a catch up post or something. And I will do one of those eventually.
Just not today.
Today, I am ranting.
Last night, while I was feeding the baby, I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed, as per usual, and I came across an article about Starbucks and their new holiday season cups.
Now, in case you aren't in the know, Starbucks likes to come out with a new design every year for the holidays. Sometimes it's got snowflakes, sometimes it's got Christmas ornaments, you know, just holiday/wintery stuff.
This year, they opted for a plain, yet kind of cool cup. It's very minimalist, it's classy, it works for not only Christmas, but Thanksgiving and New Years too, you know, the entire holiday season.
Don't they look lovely? Just a plain ol' red cup with the plain ol' Starbucks symbol on the front. How nice.
EXCEPT WAIT!!
Christians are coming out by the dozens to protest the non-Chirstmasy looking mugs. Since they were announced, tons of Christian bloggers and Church goers have come out to voice their negative opinions on the cup.
Yes, you read that correctly. Negative opinions. ABOUT A CUP.
They're claiming that by taking all of the Christmassy looking designs off the cup, they're essentially 'taking Christ out of Chirstmas' or so to speak. They are saying that Starbucks is attempting to 'de-Chritianize' Christmas, or to 'not offend anyone'.
One man asked Starbucks why they went so plain, and their short answer was that they're 'embracing the simplicity and quietness of it all. It's a more open way to usher in the holidays'.
A lot of people are up in arms over that statement, claiming they just don't want to be offensive.
There are a butt-load of problems coming from this whole issue, but here are a few of the big things that Christian folks might want to consider before banning Starbucks over a red cup.
1. The Holiday Season does not revolve around Christianity. Atheists celebrate Christmas as well. Not to mention everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving and New Year. And what about the other holidays that come up this time of year, like Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa? You don't see Jews running around painting menorah's on everything, or African-American's getting angry because their cup doesn't say Happy Kwanzaa. (For the record, I know very little about Kwanzaa).
Christians like to act like they have the corner market on the Holidays, just because they claim their god was born in December. This is America people, wake up. We are a country that is supposed to be FREE from religious bias. That means that you cannot force your religious views or practices on other people, including how or even if they celebrate Christmas.
2. Starbucks is not a Christian company. Nor have they ever been. Ready to have your delicate Christian sensibilities shaken? The Starbucks logo is based off of a PAGAN SEDUCTRESS. And not a very child friendly one either.
Yeah, your beloved 'Christian' Starbucks? Their logo comes from a topless mermaid who has her legs spread. Bet you can't guess how she lured sailors to their deaths!
Straight from the Starbucks website itself: ' a 16th century Norse woodcut of a twin-tailed mermaid, or Siren. There was something about her – a seductive mystery mixed with a nautical theme that was exactly what the founders were looking for'.
Yeah, she's a seductress, she killed sailors. That's what mermaids do. Especially naked ones like her. So no, you can't tell me that Starbucks is 'de-Christianizing', when they were never Christian to begin with. They're a company, out to make money on overpriced, not-so-great coffee.
3. ITS A FRGGIN CUP GUYS. Come on, why would you ruin the Holiday cheer by fighting over a stupid red cup? Why does it even matter? Never in my life have I witnessed something so ridiculous. And I mean, lets be honest, there are some pretty ridiculous Christians out there who want to shove their religion down everyone else's throat (not all of them, don't get your panties in a bunch). But this...man, this whole thing takes insane religious zealotry to a whole new level.
I want to point out that I neither enjoy Starbucks very much (it's more like that pick-me-up coffee when I'm dragging my butt and worn out), nor do I celebrate Christmas. So I'm not really prejudice or taking sides here. I'm just spectating from the outside.
And let me tell ya, from the outside, you Christians who are making this big fuss look like a bunch of self-centered fools. I thought your religion was based on love? How is this loving? How is trying to force everyone to celebrate the way that you do at ALL loving? It's not. It's just childish.
Anyway, I just wanted to vent my feelings at the beginning of all the Holiday Cheer (sarcasm intended), and wish you all a good winter.
Cheers!
