Each of the kids in this story are typical plot kids. You know what I'm talking about, it's the kids that movies are about. That movies are always about.
If you've never noticed it before, movies are never about normal kids. You have to either be super rich or super poor. A super good kid gone bad or a super bad kid gone good. A smart kid who makes straight A's or a tragically dumb kid who beats the system anyway. You can never just be a normal person who goes along with the flow of things, who doesn't hate everyone, who has a normal life.
You can't just be a Hallway Kid.
Do you know what I'm talking about? The Hallway Kids are the ones that you see filling up the hallways of schools or filling up the streets of cities. It's the normal people who all dress normal and act normal and go home to normal situations at night.
They're the in between people, the ones who are like the majority of us. Movies would have us believe that you can't be anybody if you're just a hallway kid. You have to stand out by being crazy. You have to be unique, and you can't do that if you don't make drama.
In the plot of almost every drama, it's a boy meets girl kind of story. You know what happens: boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy does or says something stupid, girl overreacts and runs off, usually because of a misunderstanding and she won't listen, boy tries to get her back, they reconcile, they kiss, movie's over.
But the boy can't ever just be a normal boy. He's either got to be the jock who's super popular and all the girls want him, or he's going to be super not-popular and a nerd or something and none of the girls want him. But either way, he can't just be some regular guy who is just a nice guy.
And the girl can't be a normal girl either. She either has to be really ugly turned 'beautiful', or a new girl, who also happens to be really 'beautiful', or at least Miss Popular who's a cheerleader and everybody wants to be her friend (and also, she's really 'beautiful'). She can't just be a normal girl.
Or take it to the flip side. Sometimes you get stories where a goth guy or girl get's who they want. But they're goth. They can't be normal.
Why can't they be normal?
Maybe the thought is "Who would want to watch a full length movie about normal people?"
True, that might get kind of boring. But maybe not. Just because you're normal doesn't mean that your life is boring, although the rise of modern entertainment would have us believe so. It's getting harder and harder to find something to get us to stop being bored here in America.
Why is that? Because we're told by our beloved Hollywood that we need drama or adventures. And when we can't journey to Middle Earth, we make drama.
But not everybody makes drama all the time. Yes, bad things happen to everyone, that's part of life, and yes, some people have lives that really are as extreme as the movies make them out to be. But that's not how the majority of you roll.
If you're in school, then you probably fall into the trap of feeling that you have to dress a certain way, act a certain way, be a certain person in order to fit into a certain group so you can feel like you belong and become somebody. You find your identity in everyone else around you. You don't want to be just the filler kids who fill up the hallways between classes, you want to be one of the main characters who ends up with everything at the end.
But what is wrong with the Hallway Kids? Nothing. Nothing is wrong with being average. Because here's the thing: everybody is special in a different way.
You don't have to be the popular kid to be special. You don't have to so un-popular that you hate the world either. You don't have to be a goth to be unique. Each and every person on this planet is unique in a different way.
We may just look like a face in the crowd, but we're each individuals.
Maybe you're not a hacker or an athlete or a superstar. Maybe you're not a psycho, or mathlete, or a theatrical genius. But you have something that is special to you. Even if it seems like not a big deal, you're still special to you. Maybe you're creative, maybe you're an artist, or maybe you're really good at following the rules (yes, that was a reference to the Lego Movie).
No matter what Hollywood tells people, everybody is unique and special. Embrace being a Hallway Kid if that's what you are. Don't cause drama. Don't wish your life was harder. Don't wish away what you have for something you don't. You don't have to be the Breakfast Club or Highschool Musical. You're perfect just being you.
Even though you might not feel like it, the you that you are meant to be is the you that people need. When God made you and put you where you are, He knew what he was doing, He didn't make a mistake.
If you're a Hallway Kid, be a Hallway Kid.
I love you guys, hope you're encouraged by this!
Cheers!
